Orofacial Myology

An Orofacial myologist evaluates and treats a variety of oral and facial muscles, postural and functional disorders and oral habits that may disrupt normal dental, facial and oropharyngeal development.  An orofacial myofunctional disorder can affect breathing, swallowing, chewing, speech and oral rest postures through compensatory adaptations from the abnormal postures, patterns, and habits.

  • How effective is Orofacial Myofunctional  Therapy?

Many factors will contribute to the success of the program. It is really important to have the patient invested in makIng the necessary changes and being dedicated to the therapy program.  Daily commitment is paramount to the success of the program.  It is important to have the support of loved ones, and with children undergoing orofacial myofunctional therapy, parental involvement is crucial.

We have a multidisciplinary approach and coordinate with other healthcare providers to ensure we address any issues that may be contributing to your orofacial myofunctional disorder,  whether it be a referral to an ENT, an orthodontist, a surgeon, a body worker,  a speech language pathologist...

I graduated from The University of Alberta and I have been practicing as a registered dental hygienist for 30 years.  I presently work at two different offices in Spruce Grove and love my career choice.  I developed an interest in orofacial myology 5 years ago, when my son’s orthodontist brought to our attention my son’s abnormal swallowing pattern and his low and forward oral resting position. He would not do braces until we corrected that abnormal resting position,  as the pressure from his tongue would constantly exert forces and they would affect his teeth positioning.  It took us a while to decide to proceed with the therapy.  My son was not at first wanting to have to do exercises a few times day, and because it was costly and not covered by my insurance and his teeth were straight but just had excess spacing,  I was hesitant to proceed until he was willing to commit to practicing. As soon as he was ready to put in the effort, we jumped right in and it was amazing to see how quickly the changes occurred.  I then enrolled in an introductory course and upon completion of the course,  I no longer could “unsee” all the orofacial myofunctional disorders my patients had, from tethered oral tissues (tongue ties,  lip restrictions), to improper swallowing and breathing patterns.  Re-training the tongue and other oral and facial muscles to rest in the correct position not only affects a patient’s breathing, eating and swallowing patterns, but it also changes the facial shape and tone of the facial muscles and posture. I completed my certification process in June 2022 and am proud to be a Certified Orofacial Myologist
